SCRAP's Earth Day Bazaar and Celebration

Pin It Now!

Hello.
It's that time of year to remind us how much we care about the earth and SCRAP is right in there with the celebrations.   I also wanted to mention that I will be one of the performing groups in The Amazing Maelstrom.  I play the musical saw along with the accordion extraordinaire Evan Stuckless, aka Papa Coyote.  And we will have a special guest, the mesmerizing Mr. Christopher Reitmaier, on the bicycle gears, pennies and the clarinet.  We will be playing from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. so if you are out and about, please stop by and enjoy the good times!

Scrappy Mini Top Hat

Pin It Now!

So I was going to make a mini top hat for my raffilista outfit for Filmed By Bike opening night.  I planned on following a pattern online.  I started to look around my misfit materials and I said, wait, I bet this 45 will work for the brim.  What if I glue some doilies on that?  Hey, that looks pretty good.  Oh, check out this white accordion lantern.  I bet that can be a very dramatic looking hat.  I then topped it all of with a bike image, very appropriate for the event.  So I am very proud of my first mini top hat even though it is a bit unorthodox.

Unfortunately it was a very damp evening and since my hat mostly consists of paper it stayed in its original form for about 20 minutes tops.  Everyone said they liked, but it was a little shabby for the evening.  When I get some pictures from the event I will post the after shots.
Anyway, I hope this inspires the scrappy in everyone~~~

Garden

Pin It Now!
It's that time of year to get the garden rolling!  Brandon is making me a couple of garden boxes out of free salvaged lumber.  The one that you see in the photo here is made of an old mahogany futon frame that was free on the street.
I haven't pinned down everything I want to grow this year except for my standbys, which is chard and kale and snap peas, but I am probably going to have one tomato plant, one yellow squash plant, a half row of lettuce, maybe an Asian eggplant.
Also, you may have noticed that reddish tuber in front of the vintage seed packs.  That is a sunchoke or Jerusalem artichoke.  I have never grown this let alone eaten it, but apparently it is similar to a potato.  I was enticed when I saw a box of the tubers at Naomi's Organic Garden Supply and I wanted to try it out.  The sunchoke is actually a native plant or edible weed and so it grows very easily almost anywhere.  I guess it produces these 5 to 10 foot yellow flowers, but you harvest the tubers underneath the soil.  I will keep you posted on the outcome, and if anyone has experience with this plant, please let me know.  I am very excited.
Another new item I am planting this year is edamame.  It is similar to a pea, so it probably won't be that challenging.  I guess it's a good way to amend your soil with nitrates.
Happy Gardening~

Filmed By Bike 2011

Pin It Now!

Hello.
So last year I submitted a music video to FBB.  I don't know if you have seen the video for the Scaper Bikes of Oakland -- you can youtube it -- but this was our, the Portland Scrapper Bikes, rap and video.  It is somewhat of a parody, but more so a compliment to the Scraper Bikes and just highlighting Portland's uniqueness.  I am a member and founder of the Scrapper Bikes.  I like to call myself the Pink Princess because my bike is bubblegum pink and I have glued a tiara on my bike helmet.
I have added more to my bicycle than shown here.  I know it's unbelievable, but true.  One of the first things I did to decorate my bike, and I get lot's of compliments on it, was to add file folder tabs on the spokes.  It's really simple and it looks awesome.  All you have to do is put the tab around the spoke and then hot glue the tab closed.  It's an easy way to dress up your ride in a reuse sort of way.  I got the tabs from SCRAP, of course.  I didn't buy them new.
My helmet has gone through a few reincarnations from just the tiara to a giant gold grape and floral Mohawk to what I have now, which is glittered bottle caps.   I'm kind of like a giant disco ball.
I've always had the tiara, of course, otherwise how could I remain the Pink Princess?
Anyway, so here is the video of the Portland Scrapper Bikes and I dare you not to laugh!

I hope you enjoy it.
Here is the poster for Filmed By Bike's opening night.  Super fun!
